Still going strong after almost 40 years and 3.5 million sales, the Renault Trafic deserves its popularity. Strong engines, generous load-carrying capacity and impressive versatility are allied to abundant standard equipment and good on-the-road comfort.
The latest generation Trafic (it was revamped in 2014) is available in two lengths and two heights as a panel van, as a six-seater crew van and as a spacious nine-seater minibus. At its largest, it can carry a payload of up to 8.6 cubic metres or 1,280kg; even the shorter versions will fit three Euro pallets. A full metal bulkhead is standard on all panel vans, and in Business+ trim you get a load-through hatch through which you can feed pipes and ladders up to 4.15m long. There's a passenger side door for easy access – crew vans have doors on both sides – and 16 or 18 tie-down points to keep cargo secure.
On the road, accurate steering, a smooth gearbox and a comfortable ride make the Trafic enjoyable to drive, and it's almost as quiet as a car. Its 1.6-litre diesel engine delivers up to 143bhp and 251lb ft of torque, and fuel economy of up to 47.9mpg.
The cabin is smart and feels solidly built, and it's easy to find a comfortable driving position thanks to a height and lumbar-adjustable driver's seat, and a steering wheel which adjusts for reach and rake. Visibility is good in front and behind, thanks to large mirrors and a wide-angle mirror in the passenger sun visor. Business+ trim offers impressive storage, including a phone holder on the dashboard and a middle passenger seat that folds down into a desk, with a storage compartment underneath.
Safety features include electronic stability control, hill start assist, ABS and Grip Xtend, which helps the van grip better on loose surfaces. Service intervals are every two years or 25,000 miles, and if your used Trafic is less than three years old, it should still be under its 100,000-mile warranty. Electric heated mirrors, a DAB radio with aux, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, and electric front windows are also standard across the board, along with an alarm, an immobiliser and remote central deadlocking.
