If pure strength and power are what you're after, then the Ford Ranger demands your attention. Rugged, sturdy and super-competent, it's arguably one of the best pick-up trucks on the market – and great value second-hand too.
The Ranger really is designed to tackle any terrain: Ford tested it in everything from 50°C heat with a fully laden trailer, to temperatures of -40°C at altitudes of several thousand metres, and it is designed to be able to go through water 80cm deep. It can carry loads of up to 1,307kg or 1.8 cubic metres, or 2.32m long, and can tow a trailer of up to 3,500kg, with a trailer sway control feature which controls torque and braking to keep it steady.
Inside, the Ranger is pleasant, comfortable and spacious, and comes in three body styles: a two-seater single cab, and double and super cabs, both of which have rear seats. There's lots of storage space, including a large glovebox, deep door pockets and a big bin in the central armrest. A DAB radio with USB connectivity and remote controls is standard across the range.
On the road, strapping engines provide prodigious amounts of power: newer models have either a four-cylinder 2.2-litre diesel engine delivering up to 158bhp and 284lb ft of torque, or a five-cylinder 3.2-litre diesel with 197bhp and 347lb ft, and most used Rangers are diesel too. The 2.2-litre is the more economical option, returning up to 44mpg, but the larger engine is quicker, with a top speed of 109mph and a healthy 0-62mph time of 10.6 seconds. Both are Euro 6 compliant and come with a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox.
The Ranger handles well, with a comfortable, composed ride, impressive body control, high ground clearance and responsive steering. On 4x4 models, you can switch between two and four-wheel drive using a dial, and there's hill start and hill hold assist as well as a low-range mode, which provides extra torque, power, traction and braking power for tough terrain.
Some second-hand Rangers will come with an off-road pack, which includes locking rear differentials – another feature which improves traction and helps prevent wheel spin in difficult conditions – and extra protection for the engine and fuel tank. The Ranger is also less than 2m tall, which means no issues with taking it into a multi-storey car park or the carwash.
The Ranger has a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, and standard safety kit includes traction control, an electronic stability control system, emergency brake assist, and a suite of airbags. Service intervals are every 20,000 miles or two years.
