Twice winner of the What Van? Medium Van of the Year award, the Renault Trafic is a capable, versatile panel van with strong engines, decent load-carrying capacity and a wide choice of body styles.
The Trafic underwent an extensive revamp in 2014, including improvements to the engines, load area and cabin. At its largest, this generation can carry a payload of up to 8.6 cubic metres or 1,280kg, and up to 2.93m in length – opt for Business+ trim and you’ll get a load-through bulkhead allowing you to transport objects like pipes and ladders up to 4.15m long.
The Trafic is available in two lengths and two heights as a panel van, plus as a six-seater crew van and a spacious nine-seater minibus; even the shorter versions can carry up to three Euro pallets. A left-hand side door makes access easy – crew vans have them on both sides – and 16 or 18 tie-down points keep loads secure. A full metal bulkhead is standard on all panel vans.
The Trafic is easy to drive, with nicely weighted steering, smooth, precise gear changes and a comfortable ride even with a heavy load. Its flexible 1.6-litre diesel engine comes with a range of outputs, the higher of which come with stop-start technology and regenerative braking, helping fuel economy get up to 47.9mpg. They are the best options for carrying heavy loads too, with 251lb ft of torque in the 143bhp version.
The cabin feels solidly built and is smart and car-like, with good quality materials and a comfortable driving position more akin to that of an MPV. Visibility is good both in front and behind, thanks to large mirrors and an extra-wide mirror in the passenger sun visor. Business+ trim includes a phone holder on the dashboard and a middle passenger seat that folds down into a desk, with a removable clipboard, a laptop holder and a storage compartment under the seat.Other standard equipment includes electric front windows, electric heated mirrors, a DAB radio with aux, Bluetooth and USB, a spare wheel and a 12-volt power socket.
Safety features include electronic stability control to keep the van steady in difficult conditions, hill start assist, ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution and Grip Xtend, which helps the van grip better on loose surfaces. Service intervals are every two years or 25,000 miles, and if your Trafic is less than three years old, it should still be under its 100,000-mile warranty.
