Renault is known for its engineering expertise – and when you buy a Renault van, durability, practicality and excellent build quality are the order of the day. Here we introduce you to the three vans in Renault's range: the Kangoo, the Trafic and the Master.
The reliable Kangoo is the smallest and most car-like Renault van. It comes in a variety of configurations: the standard van, which has 3.6 cubic metres of load space, the five-seater Maxi, which can carry a cargo of up to 4.6 cubic metres or 800kg, and two crew vans. Handy touches range from an A4-sized storage space on the dashboard to up to 14 load tie-down points.
The Kangoo's 1.5-litre diesel engine comes in 74bhp, 89bhp or 107bhp guise and delivers fuel economy of up to 65.7mpg; there's also an electric version - the ZE 33. Standard equipment includes a height-adjustable driver's seat and steering wheel, electric mirrors and a DAB radio and CD player with USB, MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth.
Next up is the spacious, comfortable, multi-award-winning Trafic, named What Van?’s editor's choice in 2017 and twice winner of the magazine's medium van of the year award since 2015. Versatility is its byword; it comes as either a six-seater crew van, nine-seater passenger van or a panel van, and with the latter there's also a choice of a short or long wheelbase and a low or high roof.
At its most expansive, the Trafic can carry a load of up to 8.6 cubic metres. Its 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine draws on Renault's Formula One experience, generating either 94bhp, 118bhp, 123bhp or 143bhp, and returning fuel economy of up to 47.9 mpg. With decent storage and a comfortable cab, it is, as What Van? put it, “a well thought-out package” offering “all-round quality”.
The biggest van in the Renault range is the Master, a sturdy, versatile and practical van which can carry loads of up to 17 cubic metres or 2,122kg – that's up to five euro pallets. Again, there's a panel van, a seven-seater crew van, and passenger vans with seating for up to 17 people; flatbed, Luton and tip-up truck conversions are also available. (Some conversions increase the load space to 22 cubic metres.) The Master also comes in four wheelbase lengths, from 2.58m to 4.38m, and three heights.
Its strong, reliable 2.3-litre diesel engine comes with either 108bhp, 128bhp, 143bhp or 168bhp, and delivers fuel economy of up to 40.4mpg; there's also a ZE electric option. Safety features standard on all versions include ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution, hill start assist and height adjustable seatbelts with pretensioners.
