Stylish, spacious, capable and highly practical, the Volkswagen Transporter is one of the best medium panel vans around. Its powerful engines make it enjoyable to drive as well as functional and versatile. The Transporter has actually been going since 1950 – but though its seventieth birthday is fast approaching, it's far too popular to even think of retiring.
The latest Transporter comes in a choice of two wheelbases and three roof heights, and depending on which variant you choose, offers between 5.8 and 9.3 cubic metres of load space – enough for up to three euro pallets. As well as carrying a payload of up to 1,301kg or 2.98m in length, it can tow up to 2,500kg. Access to the load area is easy thanks to a sliding side door, a step and either back doors or a tailgate (depending on what the previous owner has chosen – there may also be sliding doors on both sides). A full steel bulkhead separates the cabin from the load area, and load rings to affix your cargo come as standard.
The cab itself is spacious, with good visibility thanks to the high seating position and low dashboard, and ample storage space – if the previous owner opted for the front passenger bench seat, you'll find a useful compartment for tools underneath. The driver’s seat is height, lumbar, reach and rake adjustable and the steering column adjusts for height and rake too, so everyone should be able to find a comfortable driving position. The infotainment system incorporates a radio, Bluetooth, MP3 connectivity and USB, and steering wheel-mounted controls make it easy to use while you're driving. The standard Transporter seats two or three people but there's also a six-seater Kombi.
On the road, the Transporter is a pleasure to drive: it's quiet and refined, with excellent handling, responsive steering, willing acceleration and good body control. It's powered by a four-cylinder 2.0-litre diesel engine in four power outputs, ranging from 83bhp to 201bhp; fuel economy gets up to 51.4mpg with the BlueMotion engine.
The Transporter is packed with safety features. A system which alerts you if it senses you’re getting tired, hill start assist, ABS with electronic stability programme (designed to keep the van steady in difficult conditions), and driver and front passenger airbags are all fitted as standard. All Transporters also come with electric heated mirrors, electric front windows, an immobiliser, remote central deadlocking, start-stop engine technology, and a full-size spare wheel.
