The Ford Transit Custom promptly won the International Van Of The Year award when it was introduced in 2012 – then outsold its rivals within months. Its huge load space and versatile practicality are allied to excellent handling, bold styling, durability and low running costs to make it one of the UK's best-selling vans – and excellent value, especially second-hand. Motoring website Honest John actually called it “the best van you can buy”.
The Custom comes in a choice of two lengths, two heights and three body styles: panel van, double cab-in-van and the nine-seater kombi (there's also a Tourneo Custom people carrier). It can carry a payload of up to 8.3 cubic metres, or 1,530kg in a load bay that's wider than in most of its rivals and up to 1.8m high - there's space for three Euro pallets. All new Custom vans come with a load-through bulkhead which allows long, thin items to be passed through into the storage area under the passenger seat, extending the load length to 3.4m in the longest versions. The low load sill makes it easy to get cargo in, too.
The cabin is comfortable, car-like and logically laid out; the driver's seat is adjustable in eight ways, and the steering wheel adjusts for both rake and reach, so you can find the right driving position. There's plenty of storage too, including numerous cubbies and pockets, an A4-sized glovebox and two two-litre bottle holders.
On the road, the Custom is a pleasure to drive – smooth, agile and refined even when fully loaded, and with a ride comfortable enough to make you feel like you're in a car. Customs from 2016 onwards come with a strong 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine in three forms: 104bhp with 265lb ft of torque, 128bhp with 284lb ft of torque, or 168bhp with 299lb ft of torque, and deliver fuel economy of up to 46mpg. It's Euro 6 compliant and replaced the 2.2-litre TDCi engine used in the Custom before that.
The Custom has a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, and all models have a driver's airbag, hill start assist, and ABS with electronic stability control and electronic brakeforce distribution.
