The Renault Kangoo is one of Europe's best-sellers – with good reason. Spacious, practical, versatile and reliable, and great value to run, it's a tried and tested workhorse which has been steadily popular since it was introduced more than 20 years ago.
The Kangoo comes in both panel van and crew van versions, with a load bay of up to 1.86m long and a payload capacity of up to 4.6 cubic metres or 800kg. The low sill makes loading easy, and all Kangoos have a left-side loading door as well as rear doors. The Kangoo Maxihas doors on both sides, as do the five-seater crew vans, which also have split-folding back seats for extra practicality. Six tie-down points – 14 in the Maxi – keep cargo secure, and a full steel bulkhead separates the cabin from the loading bay in all panel vans.
The cabin is comfortable, with a driver's seat and steering wheel which are both height-adjustable, and plenty of storage, including a tray between the front seats and an A4 storage compartment on the dashboard. All models have a DAB radio with a CD player, Bluetooth and MP3 connectivity.
New Kangoos offer a choice of three four-cylinder diesel engines with either 74bhp, 89bhp or 108bhp, delivering up to 192lb ft of torque and fuel economy of up to 66mpg. Both manual and automatic gearboxes are available. There's also a completely electric version with a range of 124 miles in summer and 75 miles in winter. A petrol engine with a four-speed automatic gearbox is available in older Kangoos.
The Kangoo has a four-star crash test rating from Euro NCAP, and standard safety features include ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution and electronic stability control, hill start assist and, on all but the electric model, Grip Xtend, which optimises grip in difficult conditions such as snow, mud and sand. Electric mirrors, electric front windows, air conditioning, an alarm and automatic door locking at speeds of more than 6mph are also all standard.
