Is it a van? Is it a sporty head turner? Is it a taxi? Actually, yes – the Mercedes-Benz Vito can be all of these things and more. As a highly practical mid-range van from an excellent quality brand, it ticks just about any boxes you need.
First launched in 1996, the Vito was revamped in 2014 and now offers a choice of three lengths, two turbocharged engines, five power outputs, front or rear-wheel drive and a variety of seating configurations. As a panel van, it has a payload of up to 1,344kg and a load volume (in its longest form) of 6.6 cubic metres. Then there's a crew van that seats up to six, and a Tourer which seats up to nine. Plus there's an Urban version designed for city driving, a stylish Sport version with alloy wheels, and even a special six-seater taxi design.
Build quality and comfort are excellent; the cabin feels solid, the fabrics are good quality and the dashboard is intuitively laid out, with chunky controls and good visibility. Twelve buttons on the steering wheel allow you to control things like the sound system and your phone. Both the driver's seat and the steering wheel have plenty of room for adjustment, so it's easy to get comfortable, and wide openings and a low sill make loading incredibly easy. Plus, the Vito is less than 2m high, which is useful if you need to park in a multi-storey or use a car wash.
On the road, there's a choice of a 1.6-litre diesel engine with 87bhp or 112bhp, and a 2.1-litre diesel with 134bhp, 161bhp or 187bhp. All offer punchy performance, sharp handling and a refined drive. Fuel economy is good too – up to 47.1mpg – and recommended service intervals are only every two years or 24,000 miles.
