Incredibly practical, strikingly stylish and enormously versatile, the Mercedes-Benz Vito is also first-class on the road. Add to that the brand's well earned reputation for reliability and quality, and you have one of the best premium medium panel vans around.
Revamped in 2014, the Vito is available in three lengths, with front or rear-wheel drive and in a variety of seating configurations, including a six-seater crew van and a nine-seater Tourer. It can carry a payload of up to 1,344kg or 6.6 cubic metres, yet is also less than 2m high, which is useful if you need to park in a multi-storey or take it to the car wash. Wide rear doors and a sliding side door, plus a low loading sill, make it easy to get cargo in and out, and tie-down points keep it secure on the move.
The cabin feels solidly built, with good quality fabrics – including a leather steering wheel and gearknob – chunky, intuitively laid out controls and good visibility. The driver's seat is adjustable eight ways, and the steering wheel adjusts for reach and rake too, so it's easy to find a comfortable driving position. An infotainment system with a radio, Bluetooth, MP3 and USB connectivity is standard, along with steering-wheel-mounted controls so you can adjust it easily while driving.
The Vito performs excellently on the road, with responsive handling, good body control, capable steering and little noise. There's a choice of either a 1.6-litre or 2.1-litre turbodiesel engine, the latter delivering up to 187bhp and 325lb ft of torque, and fuel economy can reach 47.1mpg. Service intervals are every two years or 24,000 miles – Mercedes-Benz vans also come with 30 years' roadside assistance from new.
The brand's vans have won numerous safety awards, and standard safety features are legion: attention assist, which alerts you if it thinks you're getting drowsy; crosswind assist, which stabilises the van in crosswinds; tyre pressure monitoring; hill start assist; ABS and electronic stability control; driver and passenger airbags; three-point seatbelts for all seats and crumple zones. Other standard equipment includes electric heated mirrors, parking sensors, cruise control with a speed limiter, an immobiliser and a lockable glovebox.
