One of the largest vans in its class, the workmanlike Citroen Relay does the things you want a van to do – carry lots of stuff and tow lots of stuff – with huge competence. Add a wide choice of wheelbases, heights and body styles, and a range of punchy engines, and you've got a serious rival to the Ford Transit.
Depending on the version, the Relay can carry a payload of between eight and 17 cubic metres, or up to 2,310kg, with a load area up to 4.1m long and up to 2.2m high. A low load sill, between 49cm and 60cm off the ground, makes it easy to lift heavy items in and out; a sliding side door is standard on all models. There's a choice of four lengths, three wheelbases and three heights, and a bewildering array of variants: not just panel van, chassis cab, crew cab and Enterprise, but also tip-up truck, Luton van and dropside. In total, there are 43 ways to have your Citroen Relay.
The cab is spacious and equipped with 13 storage spaces, including a document clipboard on the dashboard, a lidded box and cup holders, plus a passenger bench seat that folds to create a desk. A DAB radio with Bluetooth and USB is standard on all models, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls make it easy to adjust while you're driving. Both the driver's seat and steering wheel are height adjustable to help you get comfortable.
On the road, the ride is comfortable and the Relay handles well, with good visibility to the front and sides, thanks in part to the high driving position, and quiet engines. Light, accurate steering helps you position the van on the road, and it's good in corners and easy to park. The 2.0-litre BlueHDi engine was introduced in 2016 to lower running costs and emissions – it delivers 109bhp, 128bhp or 158bhp, while 2.2-litre and 3.0-litre engines can be found in older models. The Relay has some of the lowest running costs in its class, with fuel economy of up to 48.7mpg.
Standard equipment includes electric front windows, heated mirrors, a full steel bulkhead, ABS, a driver's airbag, remote central locking and an immobiliser. Service intervals are every two years or 30,000 miles, which suggests high reliability.
