Practical, versatile and very spacious, the Renault Trafic combines excellent load-carrying capacity with first-class engines and generous equipment levels and comfort.
The Trafic entered its third generation in 2014, gaining a range of new engines and a tougher look. This generation can carry a payload of up to 8.6 cubic metres or 1,280kg; it's available in two lengths and two heights as a panel van, with even the shorter versions able to carry three euro pallets.
A full metal bulkhead is standard on all panel vans, and Business+ trim provides a load-through flap allowing you to carry pipes, ladders and other long, thin objects up to 4.15m in length. There's a side door for easy access – crew vans have doors on both sides – and tie-down points to keep cargo secure. The Trafic is also available as a six-seater crew van and a spacious nine-seater minibus.
The ride is comfortable even with a heavy load, with nicely weighted steering and a smooth, precise gearbox. The 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine, allied to a six-speed manual gearbox, draws on Renault's Formula One experience and is available in four power outputs, delivering up to 143bhp and 251lb ft of torque. The two more powerful engines are twin-turbos with stop-start technology and regenerative braking, which helps fuel economy reach 47.9mpg.
The smart, car-like cabin feels solidly built, with good-quality materials and good visibility both in front and behind, thanks to large mirrors and an extra-wide mirror in the passenger sun visor. The driver’s seat is height and lumbar-adjustable, so it's easy to find a comfortable driving position.
A DAB radio with Bluetooth, auxiliary and USB connectivity is standard, as are electric heated mirrors, a 12-volt power socket and a spare wheel. Safety features include electronic stability control, hill start assist, ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution and Grip Xtend, which helps the van grip better on loose surfaces.
