Land Rover has been building vehicles designed to take on the trickiest of terrain since 1948, and the brand has become synonymous with capability and strength. Not for nothing have its vehicles been used by the Red Cross in emergency operations around the world for 65 years.
Yet tough and rugged as its vehicles are, they are also premium quality, with luxurious interiors that will keep you in comfort however long or arduous your journey. They're as competent as everyday vehicles, taking crowded city streets or four lane motorways in their stride, as they are hurtling over fields or scaling mountains.
The Range Rover is as much a luxury vehicle as it is a 4x4; so classic is its design that, despite celebrating its 50th birthday next year, it is still only in its fourth generation. Its engine lineup includes a 3.0-litre twin turbodiesel with up to 271bhp and 443lb ft of torque, a 4.4-litre, 32-valve V8 twin turbodiesel with 334bhp and 546lb ft of torque, and a V8 5.0-litre petrol with up to 557 bhp and 516lb ft of torque, which races from 0 to 62mph in just 5.4 seconds. But the Range Rover is no nouveau riche boy racer; from the cushioned, massaging, leather-covered seats to the all-round LED lighting designed to make driving in the dark less tiring, comfort and luxury are ever the bywords.
Then there's the seven-seater Discovery, not only one of the most versatile and capable SUVs around, but one which inspires deep devotion among its owners. Autocar editor-in-chief Steve Cropley wrote: “You desire this car when you get in, and you’re still desiring it when you get out,” adding that this was true of every generation in the Discovery's 30-year history; even first-generation models from the 1990s remain popular for their family-friendly interior, easy side door access and compact size. Now in its fifth generation, incredibly spacious and packed with storage and luxury features, the Discovery is, again in the words of Autocar, “all but unstoppable”.
And what of the mighty Freelander, capable of wading through 50cm of water without pausing for breath; the Range Rover Evoque, the smallest, lightest and most fuel efficient Range Rover ever; or the agile, athletic Range Rover Sport?
