After almost 55 years in production, the Ford Transit still sets the gold standard for versatile, reliable panel vans. Ford's third biggest seller after the Fiesta and Focus isn't just incredibly practical and spacious, it's also a real pleasure to drive, with a smoothness and agility that belies its mighty size. It's also great value too, its popularity keeping second-hand prices competitive.
The Transit comes in so many different forms that there are actually 450 permutations on offer: three load lengths, two heights and a range of body styles including van, chassis cab, seven-seater double-cab-in-van and bus. Its cargo-carrying capacity is immense – it can transport loads of up to 15.1 cubic metres or 2.3 tonnes, or up to 4.22m long.
The meatiest Transits can pull a trailer weighing 3.5 tonnes. In contrast, the small, nimble Transit Courier is based on the Fiesta and B-Max; there's also the Focus-derived Transit Connect, which has plenty of space for five people plus luggage, and their big brother, the Custom, which immediately outsold all its rivals when it was introduced in 2012.
A sliding side door, along with the rear doors and rear step, makes access easy and there are tie-down points to keep your load secure, as well as a rubber floor covering designed to be easy to clean. In the cabin, the driver's seat is adjustable in eight ways and the steering column adjusts for rake and reach; storage includes a handy compartment under the passenger seat.
All models have a radio with Bluetooth, USB and MP3 connectivity, and remote controls so you can operate it on the move. The entry-level Base trim also includes electric front windows, remote central locking and a headlight delay, where the lights stay on for a short while after you turn the engine off so you're not left in the dark.
