The Ford Transit has been on sale for well over 50 years, and the popularity it achieved almost immediately upon its release shows no signs of diminishing. The reason for this is simple: it's one of the best panel vans available, consistently going from strength to strength. Robust, durable, reliable and hugely practical, it's also fun and car-like to drive and continues to set the benchmark for its competitors in its eighth generation, its name itself having become synonymous with light vans. All this is great news for the second-hand buyer, as armies of used Transits keep prices competitive.
Spacious and versatile, the Transit's speed and manoeuvrability belie the fact that it's the biggest van in Ford’s range, with a huge load capacity – up to 15.1 cubic metres, depending on the variant. It comes in a wide array of roof heights, wheelbase lengths and body styles –there are now more than 450 variations, including:
Transit Custom: Introduced in 2012, it immediately won the International Van Of The Year award for 2013 thanks to its excellent handling and stylish looks, before outselling all its rivals in its first few months. The latest Customs come with Ford's 2.0-litre EcoBlue TDCi engine in three forms - 104bhp, 128bhp or 168bhp - and deliver fuel economy of up to 49.6mpg. There's also a Tourneo Custom people carrier.
Transit Connect: More compact than the Custom, the Connect is derived from the Ford Focus, with which it shares some components, and was designed for city driving – it holds five people and their luggage with ease. Newer Connects have either a 1.0-litre three-cylinder 99bhp Ecoboost petrol engine, or a 1.5-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel with either 74bhp, 99bhp or 118bhp. Fuel consumption on the 99bhp variant can reach 72.4mpg, with CO2 emissions down to 103g/km.
Transit Courier: Introduced in 2014, the smallest Transit is based on the Fiesta and B-Max, a lineage reflected in its agility – its turning circle is just 10.5 metres. It comes with either a 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrol engine or a 1.5-litre Duratorq diesel engine with either 74bhp or 94bhp.
