What could be better than the Fiat Doblo, a popular van which has twice carried off the title of International Van of the Year? More Fiat Doblo, of course. The Doblo Maxi's longer wheelbase means it offers more load capacity than the standard version – making it simply outstanding for space.
At 35cm longer than the standard model, the Maxi has a range-topping 1,005kg payload, a load volume of 4.2 cubic metres – five with the high roof - and a usefully square load compartment 2.17m long and 1.7m wide. As AutoExpress put it: “The van has the kind of carrying capacity normally associated with the small panel van segment. There are rival compact vans that come close to matching the Doblo for load volume and payload but none can offer both on the Doblo’s level.” The removable torch in the load area is a handy touch.
Outside, the Maxi has the Doblo's distinctive boxy style; inside, the cabin is spacious, comfortable and appealing, with good quality materials and good visibility thanks to the broad windscreen. There's overhead storage above the windscreen, and a small space to store documents under the passenger seat base.
The Doblo is quiet and pleasant to drive and its rear suspension, specially adapted to cope with heavy loads, delivers decent handling, particularly at low speeds. The long wheelbase adds to the Maxi's composure, and the ride is even more comfortable than in the standard-length vans. It feels particularly sure of itself in corners, with ultra-light steering adding to its agility, and little body roll even in the high-roof version – which isn't disadvantaged in crosswinds thanks to the shape of its top.
A selection of capable petrol and diesel engines are on offer: the 1.3-litre and 1.9-litre diesels are popular for their balance of power and economy, while the capable 1.4-litre petrol offers extra zing. Electronic stability control, ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, hill hold control and a driver’s airbag are all standard on newer Doblos, along with deadlocks and remote central locking. Service intervals are every 21,000 miles – suggesting Fiat is confident in its engines – and newer second-hand Doblos might still be covered by both their three-year warranty and their three years of AA breakdown cover.
