Ford Transit Custom Review

Buying a Ford Transit Custom

The Ford Transit Custom is the UK’s best-selling van – and with good reason. Spacious, practical and packed with safety features and equipment, it features everything you need for a productive day at work. At just half the weight of a full-size Transit, it’s also stylish and smooth, with a class-leading driving experience that makes you feel like you’re simply in a large car.

Load capacity and practicality

Launched in 2012, the Transit Custom was named Auto Express’s first-ever van of the year in 2013 – an accolade that reflects its popularity among British business owners. Redesigned inside and out in 2017, this smart commercial vehicle comes in a range of versions, with two options for wheelbase length, two for roof height, and a choice of either three, five or six seats. The largest configuration provides 8.3 cubic metres of load space, with the smallest offering a still-impressive 6 cubic metres.

If your work involves carrying passengers and their luggage, the nine-seat Transit Custom Kombi has two rows of three seats that can all be folded or removed as necessary. This enables you to configure the layout quickly and effectively, so you have the perfect set-up for every job.

In its latest Ford Transit Custom review in September 2018, Autotrader called the van “a fantastic blend of practicality, durability, and value.”A full-width steel bulkhead, standard on all Transit Custom models, protects passengers against moving loads and helps to keep the cab quiet. As a load-through bulkhead, however, you’re not sacrificing practicality: objects of up to three metres long can slide neatly under the front passenger seat – so those 3m pipes are no longer a problem to transport.

The cargo area, meanwhile, is generous with the short-wheelbase version able to carry three Euro pallets. A rubber liner makes the load floor easy to keep clean, and there are rings on the floor and walls so you can tie downloads that need to be kept steady.

Performance

The turbocharged 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine has powered the Transit Custom since 2016, so you’ll find it on many models available on the used market. There are three variants on offer, delivering 104bhp, 128bhp and 168bhp, so you can select the output that suits your work best. All have impressive torque, making for quick, capable and powerful progress whether you’re accelerating, cruising on the motorway or carrying a heavy load up a hill.

Light steering – “the best you’ll find in a panel van”, according to Auto Express – and a smooth six-speed manual or automatic gearbox make the Ford Transit Custom a pleasure to drive. The quiet, comfortable cab has plenty of storage, including a nifty compartment under the front passenger seat cushion, which will hold a laptop or a small toolbox. Visibility is good too, thanks to the high driver’s seat, which can be adjusted eight different ways so you can find the perfect position; the steering wheel adjusts for both reach and height too and places audio system, Bluetooth, cruise control, and voice activation controls at your fingertips.

Fuel economy reaches up to 46mpg in the Transit Custom’s most frugal incarnations, and with a service interval of every two years or 37,000 miles, rather than every year, you can halve your servicing costs.

Trims and specification

All four trim levels – the base model, Trend, Limited, and Sport – are generously equipped. Base models have an aux-in socket, electric windows, two 12V charging points, and headlight delay, which means the lights stay on as you walk away from the vehicle in the dark – fantastic if you’re going home alone late at night. Remote central locking is also standard and for added security, you can choose to open one door without automatically unlocking the others.

Step up to the Trend variant for a host of practical additions such as front fog lights, electric heated mirrors, cruise control, a heated windscreen, automatic lights, and rain-sensing wipers. You’ll also enjoy a touch of luxury with the leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear knob, as well as convenience in the form of Ford's SYNC3 multimedia system, which enables you to make calls, listen to music and even dictate texts with ease.

Limited trim adds a DAB radio, heated front seats, and air conditioning, while Sport delivers larger alloy wheels, body stripes, and sports seats for that ultimate track-led feel.

Safety

The Ford Transit Custom achieved the maximum five-star crash safety rating from Euro NCAP when it was launched in 2012 – the first in its class to do so. Its electronic stability program has been designed specifically for Ford’s larger vans, so will steady the vehicle inside winds or through tighter corners, and will also adjust according to the load you’re carrying.

In addition, more recent used models include traction control, emergency brake assist – which gives the brakes extra power in an emergency – and mirrors that enable you to see clearly, meaning there’s no more blind spot to worry about. You can also specify A-windows in the bulkhead and back doors for extra visibility.
