Best van of the year 2019 winners

2019 business van awards

If you're in the market for a new motor, you'll definitely want to consider the winners of the 2019 Business Van Awards, run by the website Business Vans.

Best large trades van: Volkswagen Transporter and Peugeot Expert

Proof, if proof were needed, that at 70 years old the Transporter can still outdo most young pretenders. Business Vans managing editor Chris Wright praised its ample torque (up to 331lb ft), spacious load bay – up to 9.3 cubic metres and 2.98m long – and generous standard kit. We'd add that it also offers excellent handling and a range of strong, quick engines. The six-seater Transporter Kombi also won best crew van.

The Expert’s strength as a load carrier was the number one reason for its success; Wright mentioned its “heavy-duty suspension”, designed in such a way as to reduce its intrusion into the 6.6 cubic metre load bay, and strong power steering, again specifically designed for large loads. Yet despite its might, a design based on the Peugeot 308 keeps the Expert nimble, composed and comfortable on the road, with good grip and excellent visibility.

Best delivery van: Fiat Ducato

The Fiat Ducato won praise from Wright for its “great looks, technology, flexibility, capacity, reliability and value for money.” The praise is justified: the Ducato can carry a load of up to 17 cubic metres or 2,200kg, and its strong diesel engines deliver up to 175bhp and 295lb ft of torque. The interior, meanwhile was described as “a great place to be, offering the latest in comfort and usefulness.”

Best small trades van: Citroen Berlingo

Up to 4.1 cubic metres of load space, a spacious cabin and quirky looks have made the Berlingo a popular compact van – and the winner of several other awards, including International Van of the Year 2019. It's enjoyable to drive, with supportive seats and an absorbent suspension making it comfortable on long journeys; Wright also praised the Berlingo’s reliability, technology and fuel economy. The electric Berlingo, which has an official driving range of 106 miles, was named best green van.

Best heavy van: Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

With a huge payload capacity of up to 2,547kg or 15.5 cubic metres, the Sprinter is a first-class large van with an excellent reputation for reliability and quality. Wright's verdict mentioned that despite its size, the vehicle is “easy to drive and comfortable; road handling is among the best of any large van.” He also praised its generous equipment and safety features.

Best pick-up truck: Toyota Hilux

Europe’s best-selling pick-up has a generous load bay, strong towing ability, a powerful 2.4-litre diesel engine and generous equipment and safety features, including seven airbags and trailer sway control. And as Wright put it: “The Hilux has built a reputation for reliability all over the world, with some 18 million produced since 1968.” Hiluxes from mid-2014 onwards should still be under Toyota’s five-year, 100,000-mile warranty.
