Looking for a van that delivers good fuel economy? Here are five of the most economical small vans on the used market…
The practical Partner is one of the bestselling small vans in Europe. It can carry a payload of just over 1,000kg or 3.8 cubic metres, and offers plenty of storage in the cab too. It's available in two lengths, with a petrol engine available as well as several diesels, and is generously equipped with a safety kit and technology carried over from Peugeot's car range. Auto Express went so far as to say: “It takes the small van class to another level.”
Built on the same platform as the Partner, the multi-award-winning Berlingo was the UK's ninth bestselling van last year. It shares the Partner's spacious cabin and generous technology and safety equipment and combines them with quirky Citroen looks and a quiet, enjoyable drive even on long journeys, thanks to supportive seats and a forgiving suspension. Payload is similar: up to 4.1 cubic metres or 856kg and, like the Partner, the Berlingo is available in a variety of configurations.
The Transit Connect is the UK's fifth bestselling van and is hard to beat for everyday usability. Generous technology, smooth engines and a comfortable cabin make it a pleasure to travel in – which is unsurprising as it's derived from the Focus. Payload capacity is up to 3.6 cubic metres or 865kg. There is a caveat with the fuel economy figure though – the engine needs to be limited to 62mph, or you'll only manage a measly 67.3mpg.
Smaller still than the Connect is the nimble Transit Courier, based on the Fiesta and B-Max. It has a load volume of up to 2.4 cubic metres, and comes with tie-down points to keep cargo secure. Again, the fuel economy figure above is with a 62mph speed limiter and optional start-stop engine technology fitted – otherwise you drop to 74.3mpg, a figure which the 74bhp version of the same Duratorq diesel engine also achieves. There's also a 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrol option.
The little Corsa van can carry a payload of 571kg or 0.92 cubic metres, and has two engines: a 1.2-litre petrol delivering 69bhp, or a 1.3-litre Euro 6 diesel delivering up to 94bhp. Both have stop-start engine technology to increase efficiency, and yes, that really is the official fuel consumption figure for the diesel – making the petrol's 52.3mpg, impressive under any other circumstances, look positively extravagant. The Corsa van is great to drive too – as you'd expect, given its roots in the hugely popular supermini.
